Despite playing our first couple matches short-handed, we finished the regular season with a 13-3 mark, with our only losses coming against San Marcos (D1 playoff team), Cate (D3 playoff team), and Rio Mesa (D3 playoff team).
We qualified for the CIF D4 playoffs for the third consecutive year, and for the third consecutive year the Owls picked up a first-round victory in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. In the last three seasons, we have managed 3 playoff wins and a combined match record of 50-12.
In our first match of the playoffs, we traveled north to Templeton and picked up a 9-9 victory by a razor-thin margin (76-73 on games). Doubles led the way with 7 of 9 and Phillip Hicks and Alex Furukawa each added a win in singles plus hard-fought games in their other matches to reach the decisive total.
The second playoff match was the next day, and featured another 2-hour drive. This time it was down to play the Buckley School in Los Angeles. Again, the Owls fought beak-and-claw to level the match at 9-9 by taking the final two matches on-court. In the end, our fortunes from the previous day were reversed, and we conceded defeat by a 68-70 margin on games.
Next season, we will return 8-of-9 starters from that last playoff match. With the addition of several new players, there is no doubt that we are well-prepared to continue the streak of impressive playoff appearances!
My attention will now be turned to the Laguna Blanca Summer Tennis Camp, which is designed to prepare our middle school students for taking the next step and hopefully becoming part of this successful team.
