Cate Blanks La Reina in Tri-Valley League Opener

Cate Girls’ Tennis opened regular season play with a blemishless performance against La Reina High School. The Cate team won 18-0 despite resting their senior captains Grace Fuss and Carol Cai.

In singles, Aminah Hill started at #1, but was substituted out after a convincing 6-0 victory in the first round. Madeline Vanica picked up the remaining two wins at that position, while Fritze Mayer and Yuki Kobayashi chipped in three sets each at #2 and #3 singles (respectively).

In doubles, the pairing of senior Mia Foster and sophomore Ashi Kamra picked up where they left off last week against Dos Pueblos, with 6-0, 6-1, and 6-3 victories at the #1 spot.
The doubles combinations of sophomores Julianny Forry/Maesa Vonkusolkit and freshman/sophomore tandem Ellie Tunnell/Emily May also swept their three rounds of play. Forry and Vonkusolkit were particularly dominant, earning their wins without dropping a single game (6-0, 6-0, 6-0).

Coach Thorpe’s Comments:

I was really happy with the way the girls performed, despite not having the benefit of the team’s top-2 players. Going into your first home match and first league match of the season without your team talismans can be a little unnerving, but everyone stepped up and not only got the wins, but also worked on elements from our practices that will serve us well later in the season.
