The Second Half of the Season Starts Today
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Cate girls’ tennis and our match against Carp High was no exception. Despite bringing in fans from as far away as Ohio (my mom and my aunt), we were beaten by last year’s D5 CIF champions 15-3. Continue reading “The Second Half of the Season Starts Today”

Cate Girls’ Tennis 2013 Season Player Introduction
It’s that time of year again, and although the warm weather hasn’t shown it yet, we’re headed into the fall season and I’m back for my 5th year with Cate Girls’ Tennis. Last year we graduated six seniors and weren’t sure what was coming this year in terms of reinforcements, but here we are a few weeks in with 16 players! In no particular order, here they are: Continue reading “Cate Girls’ Tennis 2013 Season Player Introduction”

Owls Make Round of 16 in CIF and Win Condor League Doubles Title
After beating a very strong Westminster team in the first round of the playoffs, the Owls came up short against Santa Ynez, despite holding a 4-2 lead after the first round. It’s clear that we got a terrible draw, with Santa Ynez going on to play the closest match against JW North, the dominant CIF champions. Even in the first round, the Westminster coach explained that they’d gone to a 9-9 tie with Estancia earlier in the season and that team was seeded fourth in the tournament. Still, for a team that hadn’t made the playoffs in 9 years, it was a big step forward. Continue reading “Owls Make Round of 16 in CIF and Win Condor League Doubles Title”

Laguna Beats Cate for the First Time!
It’s been a long time coming. In my four years coaching the Laguna Blanca boys’ tennis team we’ve experienced our fair share of frustration at the hands of the Cate tennis team. What happened yesterday was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had as a coach and a member of a tennis team. Continue reading “Laguna Beats Cate for the First Time!”
Owls beat Nordoff + Photo-tour of a Laguna Warm-up

It was another joyous victory to be sure, but I also had the opportunity to document part of what goes on before we start the matches: the infamous Owl warm-up. So, without further delay, a photo-tour of what goes on before every practice and every match. Continue reading “Owls beat Nordoff + Photo-tour of a Laguna Warm-up”
Early Wins for Laguna Blanca Tennis in 2013
Well, the 2013 Laguna Boys’ season is finally underway and off to a good start.
We scored a 12-6 win against Orcutt Academy last week that featured a clean sweep from our singles guys (Ben Furukawa, Tristan Prinz, and Phillip Hicks). In addition, Jack Espy and Martin Barnick were in fine form, chipping in two wins and playing the number one team close. I know how hard all five of those guys have been working since last spring so I expected them to play well, but it’s still exciting for me to see them get off to a successful start.
